Workshop at HIT Holon
International Design Week 2022

23 to 27 October I will host a workshop at Holon Institute of Technology ( Israel) on problem oriented design and (digital) products: »Tasting or Waisting: Design as Problem Solving.« We will explore the problem space all around »food«: production, preparation, consumation, and waste.

Cybernetics, Information Theory, the Ulm School,
and Latin America

New Journal Article in AI & Society

The Chilean Cybersyn project, an attempt to manage a nation’s economy by cybernetic methods, has evoked more and more interest in recent years. The project’s design lead, Gui Bonsiepe, and several team members were alumni of the Ulm School of Design—an institution that has been labelled “Bauhaus successor” and today is famous for a no-arts and method-led design approach with strong societal aspirations. The school also influenced the emerging design discipline in Latin America during the 1960s and 70s. This article reviews topics in the Ulm curriculum that influenced "Ulmian" thinking, but often remained unnoticed in design centred publications. Cybernetics, Operations Research and Information Theory and their relation to design are discussed and the related scholars are portrayed critically.

Published in a special issue on Cybernetics in Latin America (2021) of AI in Society, Journal of Knowledge, Culture and Communication. Available online at https://rdcu.be/cDJfF

Evolution, disruption and continuity –
the early years of the Ulm School of Design

New book chapter published

Despite all differences of opinion and change of direction at the Ulm School of Design, there was also a great continuity that constitutes the inner core of the school: design as a socially effective discipline and following this, responsible designers. Design embedded in science and technology, and above all the unyielding adherence to the idea of a rational and thus comprehensible design process.

The book has been published in Brazil and is bilingual, the text is also available in Portuguese: "Evolução, interrupção e continuidade – os primeiros anos da Escola de Ulm" In: Livia Debbane (ed.) Boa forma Gute form. Design no Brasil 1947-1968. ISBN 978-84-18895-28-9.

Jornadas para Docentes
Confederación de Escuelas de Artes Plásticas y Diseño
18 octubre 2019, Barcelona

I will talk about the »Herencia de la Bauhaus« [The heritage of the Bauhaus], using Hannes Meyer's reforms towards a more science and society driven design approach as a starting point — in order to see what is left of it today, and which aspects might be worth reconsidering.

Word Industrial Design Day, 26. Juni 2019, Frankfurt/Main

I will talk about Integrated Design, based on German design history and my personal experience in the design schools of Cologne, Bremen, Berlin, and Gmünd. Here's a short description from the conference web site:

Doch was bedeutet das Wörtlein eigentlich?
